Seniors visit Le Touquet

Posted: 14th October 2015

Le Touquet

Meeting at 4.45am to take a dozen excited 11- and 12-year-olds to France may not be everyone’s idea of a relaxing start to the weekend, but I genuinely was excited to be taking our Year 7 & 8s to Le Touquet last Saturday!  Throughout the whole day, they were all an absolute credit to the school and to their families.  We had a wonderful time exploring the market in Boulogne, with a personal favourite moment being when one of the boys, trying to locate an advertising flyer, asked for “un avion”!  We met and spoke to a number of helpful, friendly locals, who were encouraging as the children embraced the challenge of using French in an unfamiliar situation.  We then headed down the coast and spent the afternoon enjoying sports, bizarre rainbow-coloured drinks and a ride on the carousel on the vast empty beach at Le Touquet.
This was a great experience for the pupils, most of whom were travelling abroad without their families for the first time; they overcame with spirit their anxieties about the tunnel, speaking French and coping abroad and have much to be proud of. What a great start to the Challenge Award and boost to the pupils’ self-confidence! Thank you very much to Mr Hammond and Frances for giving up their Saturday and to the parents who were up at such an indecent hour to see us off!
