Pupil report: Year 8 trip to AEGON International Tennis

Posted: 4th July 2014 | Category: Sports, Year 8

On the 19th of June the Year 8 entourage set out on a trip to the AEGON international tennis in Eastbourne. The sun was shining and it was a perfect day to watch and get involved with some tennis.

On arrival we had a look around at the courts, stalls and interactive things that were on offer to us, including a camera that measured  how fast you served. Having found our bearings, we all met up again at the entrance and we were introduced to mini tennis.

Mini tennis was a plot of land, in the car park, on which were many entertaining, exciting and interactive games that we were going to do. There were around 6 stations and in our groups we rotated around them until they were all completed. An example of a station was a rebound net. This was a net which you and your partner, using the tennis rackets provided, would hit the ball at and it would bounce back allowing you to get the feel for tennis without a rival to compete against.

After mini tennis we split up again and had lunch. This period also gave some of us the chance to buy or look around at what was available to us. In our case we bought a big pink tennis ball which we later got signed by many professional players.

Following the lunch break we were taken by our guide to centre court where we sat and watched our 45 minute slot of exhilarating tennis. We watched a ladies singles match. Some of us had never seen tennis live before so this was a worthwhile opportunity.  After the tennis, the day came to a close and we returned to school.

Thank you Mr Pollard for organising this trip and Mrs Stewart for also helping. It was a brilliant experience that was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
