Meet our Kindergarten Leader, Molly Mills

Posted: 22nd June 2012 | Category: EYFS, Kindergarten

Molly Mills

Skippers Hill is delighted to welcome Molly Mills to lead our brand new Kindergarten class. Molly has a wealth of teaching experience in both private and state education and brings with her a clear vision for the new Kindergarten class. Molly very kindly took the time to take part in our mini interview.

What attracted you to this opportunity?

An opportunity to help set up a new Kindergarten at Skippers Hill only happens once and that is what initially attracted me to the post. Obviously I had read the recent ISI report too and was very impressed, especially with regards to the outstanding EYFS within the school. In addition to this, my teaching ethos is very similar to Skippers Hill’s ethos of “ teaching individuals and not classes”. Needless to say, when I had my initial interview and was shown around by Mr. Lewis I was hooked!

What skills and experience can you bring to Skippers Hill?

I have a vast experience in both state and independent education. I have taught all ages of Primary School from EYFS to Year 6 with a specialism in Drama and Literacy. I have had several leadership positions; my most recent at Unicorn School in Richmond Kew where I was Head of the Pre-Prep for three years prior to the birth of my first daughter Pia. At Unicorn I was very involved with the school development plan, the redevelopment of the EYFS building and Science laboratory, and also extending a garden area for all the children to enjoy. I was also responsible for all the Pre-Prep drama which I enjoyed immensely and each year I wrote and directed the Christmas Nativity. More recently, since the birth of my second daughter Freya, I have been working part time teaching a Year 1 class at Sherwood Park Community Primary School in Tunbridge Wells. My Drama has been a key tool in delivering a dynamic and exciting curriculum to children who are not naturally motivated to learn due to their difficult backgrounds. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges that teaching in this environment has created for me and I have relished the successes I have achieved through watching the children make excellent progress.

What is your vision for the Kindergarten at Skippers Hill?

My vision for the Kindergarten at Skippers Hill is for it to be a fulfilling and stimulating learning environment for 3 – 4 year old children. The outdoor facilities of Skippers provide an ideal environment for children to develop their understanding of the world around them. It presents itself as a perfect environment for child-centred learning. The key for providing excellent learning is also communicating with parents and I place huge value on parents being involved at every stage of their child’s education. I believe that Skippers Hill Kindergarten will give every child the perfect foundation for their future learning; they will be ready and fully prepared for the Reception Year. Their individual learning needs will be taken into account and the curriculum will be tailored towards these needs.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

As I mentioned previously, Drama has played a huge part in my teaching. In my spare time I am part of the Deanery Players and we perform productions once a year (I will be performing at Pembury Church as Mary Magdalen on Good Friday). I also help to run a Summer Camp at Lamberhurst St Mary’s Church throughout August where a variety of activities are organised for local children. I am an avid fundraiser having run half marathons for various charities. Being a Mum of young children, I do spend most of my time running around after my children too!
