Introducing our new staff

Posted: 23rd May 2014

We are delighted to introduce three new members of staff who will be joining us at Skippers in September:

Mark Hammond - Deputy Head
Mark is currently Pastoral Co-ordinator and a Year 6 teacher at The Geneva English School and was previously a Head of House at the Junior King’s School, Canterbury.

Mark graduated from Manchester University and followed this with his PGCE and an MA in Education. He is an experienced polymath who can teach many subjects and loves games too! Mark’s children will both join the school in September and we look forward to welcoming them all.

Mark says: “Sitting here in the glorious sunshine of Geneva, East Sussex seems a long way off but the Hammond clan is very excited to be on its way to Skippers Hill this Summer. My family and I very much look forward to getting to know everyone and I am particularly excited to be joining such a wonderful community at an exciting phase of the school's development. See you in September - if not before!”

Alex Gurran - Sports and PE Master
Alex graduated from Durham University and has a PGCE in PE from Brunel. He currently teaches PE, Football, Rugby, Netball and Cricket at the John Madejski Academy in Reading, as well as running a wide range of extra-curricular activities and is also the Humanities cross curricular co-ordinator. Alex has been looking to relocate to East Sussex and we look forward to adding this fine young man to our staff.

Alex says: “‘I am very excited to become part of the Skippers Hill community as it is easy to see that the teachers and pupils have made it a warm and friendly place to be. I will endeavour to continue the great work done so far at your school, and create new opportunities that will allow Skippers’ pupils to try exciting physical activities, that will help them develop into successful young men and women.”

Emma Harvey - French and Latin Teacher
Emma will be joining us part-time in September to take over the French Department. Emma is a Cambridge graduate with a BA in French and Spanish. She is a talented and highly qualified linguist and is a welcome addition to Skippers, together with her daughters who will be joining our Kindergarten.

Emma says: “It is really exciting to think that in a few months I will be starting at Skippers.  I have been bursting with new teaching ideas for the last couple of years, since taking a break to have children, and I am thrilled to be able to put them into practice here. I don’t think that my daughters and I could possibly have found a happier or more beautiful place to settle. My own French teacher at GCSE was an absolute inspiration (if slightly crazy!) and my aim at Skippers is to inspire pupils to love other cultures and languages and to want to get out there - to travel abroad and to read more. I can’t wait to get started!’
