Fantastic Success for U13s at Jersey Netball Tournament

Posted: 21st March 2013 | Category: Sports

This year's U13 team have been the most successful ever at Skippers and we have won all but two matches. One of these 16 - 17 against Le Rocquier in Jersey and the other in the final of the Jersey Tournament.

They are a very talented and focused group of girls who have worked hard and deserve their success. They have been ably captained by Gabbi who has been a stalwart defence who on occasion had very little to do! Sophie has been a prolific Goal Attack and has amassed an amazing 217 goals during matches. Our athletic Centre, Annabel has been fast and accurate on the court and Bibi and Jemima have been reliable and have created space on court and as Wing Defence and Wing Attack. Gabby and Jessy, our two Year 7 players, have been strong as Goal Keeper and Goal Shooter and will form a strong core of the team next season. Amelia has been a patient reserve and has played admirably on several occasions. Isabelle has also played at times and her game has improved hugely over the season.

On a beautiful Friday afternoon, our two Skippers teams gathered at an indoor centre called Les Ormes. There were 20 teams from Jersey, Guernsey and the mainland.

It's always tough being in the B team and our girls were in a strong group. Although they were determined and steadfast, they didn't win a game and had to meet the only team that had beaten the A team this season. Well done to all of you and to Bella for being a positive and efficient Captain.

The A team made an excellent start by beating Guernsey school, St Sampson, 14 – 0. Our second match was a win against a young team from Belmont 19 – 0. Haute Vallée from Jersey were also easily dispatched 18 – 0. At this point we knew we had qualified for the quarter finals as we could only come first or second. Our last group match was against St Michael's Jersey whom we had not been able to beat in 17 years. Our girls soon showed their superiority and won 13 – 5. This made us winners of our group.

The quarter-finals brought us against our old friends St Michael's Kent and they made our defence work harder. The outcome was 11 – 6.

In the semi-finals we played another English school, Durlston Court, who had a Goal Defence who was almost 6 feet! However, we managed to win easily 11 – 5.

We were now in the final! We played Jersey College for Girls who were superb and we learnt later that they had the majority of the Jersey team players. They won 6 – 13.

This is the furthest that Skippers Hill have ever reached in all our years in Jersey and I am very proud of our girls.  To see them receive their runners-up medals was a fitting culmination to a most successful season.
