At 7.15 on Tuesday morning the party of 42 met at Gatwick. An early loss of his boarding pass by a certain pupil led to a bit of a rush to the aircraft and the first award of the “Turban of Shame” to the person concerned! A 30 minute flight and we were then taken by coach to the luxurious Mayfair Hotel.
The first session on Tuesday opened with Girls’ Netball and Boy’s Football v St Michael’s UK.
These were closely contested games and many friendships were forged after these initial matches.
Back to the hotel for a swim and a shower.
At the end of the day everyone enjoyed a luxurious supper.
The second day saw the Boys XI play Victoria College at Hockey. Despite valiant efforts, the team lost. The experience of playing on a full size astro was fun!
In the afternoon, Skippers Hill fielded three teams. The A’s had the best chance but were caught napping by Priory. The girls played against St Michael’s Jersey at Netball and lost by a narrow margin..
Thursday saw the Indoor Hockey Tournaments. In the morning the girls A came 5th and the B’s came 7th. In the afternoon the Boys played strongly. The A’s were in a closely contested group with three A teams. They won 2 matches and lost one but scored and qualified for the Quarter-finals in second place, where they beat Victoria College. In the semi-finals, they lost to Ballard who went on to win the competition. It was still a great performance to come 4th out of 24 teams. Well done! Toby scored 9 goals and 6 of the 7 players were Year 7’s so next year should be interesting.
Friday saw the Boys playing Rugby, where Oscar and Kyle were injured and knocked out of further competition. Toby and his team fought valiantly Their defence was awesome!.
The girls played in the Travtel Indoor Netball Tournament where they played with determination and finished 3rd in their group.
Toby captained the England Team against Jersey on the Saturday morning and was well-supported by young Dylan Leisinger and Thomas Ridge in a fast and rough game. The island team prevailed 38-12..
The energetic sporting schedule was interspersed with some equally energetic retail therapy, bowling and beaching. We also managed to fit in a visit to the Jersey War Tunnels and the famous Gerald Durrell Zoo.
Evenings were spent making new friends, swimming, disco dancing and asking the hotel porters to open rooms, having locked the keys inside for the umpteenth time!
The hotel and lunch venues fed us well throughout, without chips needing to be the staple diet.
We returned on the Saturday, exhausted but pleased with a very successful tour.
Our boys and girls made fine tourists. They were complimented on their behaviour throughout and learned many new skills: how to find the bedroom floor; how to use a shower; how to pretend to be asleep when the teachers were on their rounds; how to win well and how to lose with grace. They also mingled well with the other students and emails and phone calls have been the order of the day since then!
The Year 7’s are already planning next year’s trip, whilst the Y8’s are bemoaning the fact they will not be included!
Roll on 2013!
